Innovative Ways to Dramatically Increase a Home’s Storage Capacity

In a classic routine on home storage, the late comedian George Carlin noted how often the accumulation of ‘stuff’ required Americans to upgrade to bigger homes. “That’s all a house is,” he joked, “a place for your stuff. Sometimes you gotta get a bigger house. Why? Too much stuff!”

Which begs the question, are there affordable ways to add storage to a home versus the far pricier option of buying a bigger home (at higher interest rates)? The short answer: yes!

Innovative Approaches to Adding Storage

Ever thought about the empty space beneath your feet as you tromp down the stairs? Or cast your gaze upward to consider suspended or vertically aligned storage spots? In many homes, there are storage areas hiding in plain sight that just require some basic renovations. Here are just a few.

Under-Stair Compartments – In many homes, stairs are erected over empty spaces. In our cover image, homeowners built in a reading nook. But many others choose to put in drawers, cabinets and pull-out shelves.

Built-Ins – In many homes there is a significant amount of ’empty’ space lurking behind walls. A seasoned home renovator can easily spot these locations, remove the facade and build in shelve (we’ve even built secret rooms into these spaces!).

Look Up – Many homes have tall ceilings where items can be stored with elevated shelves. But even in homes with more standard 8-foot ceilings, out of the areas can be used to suspend items (for example, bicycles in garages).

Floating Shelves – They’re called ‘floating’ because of the way they’re installed, with no visible means of support. Floating shelves can be installed pretty much anywhere but corners make for terrific storage spots.

Hooks & Racks – Sounds like a torture instrument, but suspension or hanging hooks (over the backs of doors, for example) are convenient for commonly-used items. Suspended ceiling racks can be a stylish way to storage pots and pans .

Furniture – Yes, some beds come with pre-built storage compartments, but they can be added too. Similarly, Ottomans and coffee tables often include storage.

The key here is simple: to reexamine your home for ’empty spaces’ that could easily be converted into storage. To detect ‘hidden spaces’ behind walls or under stairs, call a professional like us!
