What Women Want in a Home Bathroom Remodel
While it’s safe to say that women and men are jointly involved in the remodeling of a kitchen (usually the one who does the majority of the cooking gets more of a vote), the bathroom – particularly the master bath – is almost always the domain of the woman.
And for good reason since women typically (though not universally) spend more time in the bathroom than do their male counterparts. As such, we thought it might be useful to look at some of the remodeling features women look for the most when it comes to a bathroom remodel.
Spa Inspirations
Statistics show that Americans each year spend roughly $17 billion on spa treatments, with women constituting a majority of those visits. This may help explain why women specifically seek spa-like features in their home bathroom remodels, including multiple shower headers, a sitting bench, soaking tubs, a steam component, and more than one niche (recessed shelves for bathing products). The bottom line: in a tension-filled world where dollars might restrict spa visits, why not transform one’s own bathroom into a personal spa?
Natural Materials
On the same note, many women seek a bathroom design that features natural materials, such as stone, wood, tile, and natural textures. Earthy, natural colors are also sought for walls, vanities, schluter (trim), and flooring.
Multifaceted Lighting
Gone (or going) are the days of standard bathroom bulbs, replaced by LEDs, backlit mirrors, dimmable options, and voice-activated controls. Many women will ask for a combination of smart lighting and music controls to better control their in-home spa experience.
Floating Vanities
Today’s bathroom vanities are undergoing a true renaissance, with many female homeowners asking for floating vanities (wall-mounted) with space underneath for easier cleaning, storing slippers, etc. In the vanity image above, for example, you can see that it is floating, features a number of natural elements, and a distinctive cross-section of tile types.
Innovative Storage
Much like our post on kitchens, today’s homeowners are looking for unique approaches to storage. This is particularly true for women and bathroom remodels, where a combination of bathing products, hair treatment solutions, and everyday items need to be stored out of sight yet easily accessible.
